Interventional Nephrology

Interventional nephrology is a subspecialty of nephrology that focuses on minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to manage kidney-related conditions. It combines expertise in kidney disease, dialysis access, and vascular procedures to improve treatment outcomes for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Interventional nephrologists perform procedures that were traditionally handled by vascular surgeons or radiologists, reducing the need for open surgeries and improving dialysis efficiency, vascular access, and overall kidney health.

Key Areas of Interventional Nephrology

1. Dialysis Access Management

Patients undergoing dialysis need a well-functioning vascular access. Interventional nephrologists specialize in:
✅ Placement of Dialysis Catheters (Temporary & Permanent)
✅ Fistula and Graft Creation & Maintenance
✅ Angioplasty & Stenting – Opens narrowed blood vessels to improve blood flow.
✅ Thrombectomy – Removal of blood clots from dialysis access sites.
✅ Fistulogram – A special X-ray test to check for blockages in dialysis access.

2. Kidney Biopsy (Percutaneous Renal Biopsy)

A needle biopsy of the kidney is performed using ultrasound or CT guidance to diagnose:
✔ Glomerulonephritis
✔ Lupus nephritis
✔ Diabetic nephropathy
✔ Polycystic kidney disease

3. Interventional Procedures for Vascular Access

  • Balloon Angioplasty – Opens narrowed veins in dialysis patients.

  • Stent Placement – Metal stents are inserted to keep blood vessels open.

  • Catheter Replacement or Removal – To ensure proper dialysis function.

Benefits of Interventional Nephrology

🔹 Minimally Invasive Procedures – Reduces surgical risks and speeds up recovery.
🔹 Faster & More Effective Dialysis Access Management – Prevents complications and maintains long-term access.
🔹 Reduced Need for Surgery – Many vascular issues can be treated with simple interventions instead of major surgeries.
🔹 Improved Patient Outcomes – Helps patients continue dialysis smoothly without interruptions.
